- Mix together the flour, sugar, butter, and egg until well combined
- Refrigerate the dough for 1 hour
- Roll out the dough to 5mm thickness and cut into desired shapes using cookie cutters (stars, trees, circles, hearts)
- Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 10-12 minutes until lightly golden around the edges
- Allow cookies to cool completely before decorating
- For the royal icing: Mix the powdered sugar with egg white and lemon juice until smooth
- Divide the icing into portions and add different food colorings as desired
- Adjust consistency with small amounts of water – thicker for outlines, slightly thinner for flooding
- Transfer each color to piping bags and decorate cookies as desired with seasonal designs
- Let the icing dry completely at room temperature before storing
