Nirvana – The Man Who Sold The World Vinyl

This is a great song from Nirvana’s 1994 MTV Unplugged album.

But this post is not really to talk about Nirvana, but rather Sam Altman, the man behind #ChatGPT.

Sam Altman is the CEO of OpenAI, the parent of the wonder kid, ChatGPT. Last week he sat down with Lex Friedman for episode 367, an epic 2.5 hours interview, discussing at length the future of AI, the ethical implications of AI, the OpenAI mission and much more.

If you haven’t heard it yet, it’s an epic conversation, these in my view are the 5 striking points

  • Alignment: It’s obviously a key theme and another highly technical term about to go mainstream, alignment is about getting AI to do what it’s supposed to do and to not do what it’s not supposed to do. With the release of GPT-4, a hugely powerful model, alignment is a key to many things, such as user protection and other Ethics-related topics.
  • Elon Musk: The founder of Tesla and SpaceX is concerned about the risk of AI poses to humanity: He is been quite vocal about that on socials and stated that AI and AGI pose more risk than nuclear weapons.
  • Wokism : No one knows what “woke” means anymore. ChatGPT was previously labelled as a “woke” chatbot, but the meaning of woke was somehow lost in translation
  • Competition: Sam Altman, expects more AGI-like or weak AGI models to come to the market
  • Complexity: GPT-4 is supposedly the most complicated software ever made. Therefore beating Windows, MacOS, Google Search and Facebook to that title!

An other hugely interesting point from this interview is the optimism of Sam Altman for the capacity of AI to help improve the world.

One way to see that is that such systems enable us humams to explore things we would not do without AGI, among thoese : building a website, creating powerful imagery, or organizing data.
This way of viewing things lead to AI making us more human.

FarmNetz is a marketplace which allows you to connect to hundreds of sustainable producers, you can buy things that you always wanted to buy such as gluten-free macarons, exotic honey or handmade natural soaps. Sustainability is out of the question because all products are either organic or natural.
With more possibilities, we become more humans!

Oh and about selling the world? During the podcast interview, Sam Altman asked whether GPT-4 should be shared or open-sourced?

OpenAI giving the full control of the GPT-4 model to the world could potentially ‘sell the world’ and the powers of the first AGI!
